N a tu re feems to have devoted abundant a ttention to th e embellifhment o f this common in fe f t: its
glow o f colouring is peculiar and inimitable. The prevailing hues do not fo ftria ly pleafe us by their
harmony as th e ir contra il, which indeed is ftriking, or ra th e r glaring, b u t upon th e whole produce a
rich effeft. T h e ground colour o f the body is teflaceous, gloffed with a clear pellucid green, and as the
in fe a moves, th e more prominent parts illumined by th e concentrated rays o f lig h t th a t ftrike upon its
polilhcd fnrface appear highly metallic, partaking eith er o f a braffy, or golden fplendonr.
T h e re is anothe r fpecies o f th e Melolontha genus which alfo is found plentifully in New Holland th a t
bears a ftrong affinity to this fpecies, but is o f a deeper golden colour, and does n o t appe ar changeable to
green as in o u r fpecies viri-
