This is a fine confpicuous in feft, and bears in this country the trivial appellation o f th e Botany Bay
Diamond Beetle,” in allufion to its refemblance to th a t brilliant creature Curculio Imperialis, th e fpecies
known moft commonly with us by the name o f the Diamond Beetle. T h e fimilitude between thofe
fpecies is, however, remote. Curculio Spectabilis partakes in fome degree o f th e form, fize, and habit
o f Imperialis, b u t is altogether deftitute o f th e lovely fpavkling luftre which fo eminently charafterifes
the la tte r fpecie.s. A magnified figure o f this beetle is reprefented clinging to the bloftbms o f th e Metro-
lideros Citrina in the upper part o f th e plate; this, as well as C. Imperialis, being a moft delightful
objeft for microfcopical obfervation.
Curculio Speftabilis, once a rare infeft, has o f late years ceafed to be confidered valuable in the efli-
mation o f the Entoraologifts o f this country, in confequence o f th e number brought h ith er a t various
times from our fe ttlement in New South Wales. T h ro u g h o u t th e whole iiland o f New Holland this
feems to be one o f th e moft abundant infefts, and being a creature o f remarkable figure and appearance,
we are not to be furprifed th a t it fliould a ttra ft th e attention o f thofe who colleft the natura l produftions
o f that country, either as objefts o f curiofity for themfelves, or for th e fake o f emolument.
