A lthough h ith e rto efleemed a ra rity among th e entomolognfts o f this country, Lucanus jE n e u s appears
to be by no means unfrequent in fome p arts of th e iiland o f N ew H o llan d ; we have lately feen, for
inftance, a parcel o f them b ro u g h t from th a t co untry, amounting to not lefs than fifty fpecimens,
all which were colledfed in th e environs o f th e Englifli fettlement a t New Soutli Wales. T h e fpecies has
thus become p re tty common now in E n gland. W h e n Fabricius defcribed i t, this infeft, on th e contrary,
was extremely rare, th e only fpecimens o f it known in this country, o r perhaps in Europe, being at
tlia t time in the Bankfian cabinet; for the fpecies was originally difcovered in Norfolk iiland, in the Pacific
Ocean, by Sir Jofeph Banks, Fabricius did n o t certainly examine this infeft with his accuftomed accuracy
and critical difcrimination, or he would not have aifigned it to his new genus L e th ru s, (th e firft in
bis clafs EleuterataJ lince it is moft affuredly a Lucanus o f the Fabrician, as well as th e Linnsean Syftem.
T h e figures o f this infeft in th e annexed plate exhibit two very firiking varieties o f this fpecies, one
being o f a fine golden colour, and th e o th e r a dark green. O f th e la tte r kind fome other fpecimens have
occurred to our obfervation in which the colours varied from a dark green to blue, or a t leaft blueiih.
T h e fpecimens in th e cabinet o f M r. F rancillon are from Norfolk Ifland.
