This gigantic fpecies o f th e Sphinx tribe was altogether unknown till very lately to th e entomologifts
o f this country. T h e firft fpecimen o f it th a t was moft probably ever bro u g h t to Europe was th a t in the
colleftion o f Dr. W h ite , and which was afterwards configned to tlie cabinet o f Mr. Francillon, where it now
remains, T h is is not however the only fpecimen o f the fpecies in this country a t pre fent, for M r. M ‘Leay
alfo has lately obtained one in very fine condition among fome other ra re and valuable infefts from
N ew Holland.
