This is an infeft o f moft extraordinary appearance. I t was difcovered in New Holland by Dr. W h ite ,
who reiided in th a t country for fome time, and is at prefent in tlie cabinet o f M r. Francillon.
Dr. Schreibers o f Vienna, when in England, defcribed this fpecies o f Cerambyx, with feveral other
very curious Auftralafian infefts, from tlie cabinet o f M r. Francillon, in a paper prefented to theLinnaean
Society o f London, and which was afterwards printed in th eir tranfaftions as above referred to. T h e names
affigned to tliofe infefts by th e ingenious D r. Schreibers are for th e moft p a r t retained by u s ; b u t we
have to regret th a t th e prolixity o f his fpecifical diftlnftions do not fo perfeftly accord with our ideas as to
allow us to adopt them alfo, without material abridgment, and fome alterations : they wa n t that declfive
concifenefs which fo eminently diftinguilhes the charafters o f th e g re at Swedifti naturalift, and o f Fabriciu
s ; examples which, in our mind, cannot be too clofely imitated in th e fcientific labours o f future
entomologifts.
