MB. .51. (two varieties). , , , Very rare.
Executed by Martin Smeitzing: the obverses of the two
specimens above mentioned are from different dies. Tbe sun,
tbe favourite badge of Louis XIV., is again introduced to
Symbolize tbe obscured glories of France. Louis affected to
bear bis misfortunes witb calmness, but tbe constraint bad
sucb an effect upon bis constitution tbat it was thought necessary
to prescribe frequent bleeding. At bis court no mention
was made of military transactions; all was solemn, silent, and
reserved. Tbe reverse records tbe various successes of tbe
campaign, wbicb contributed to bring tbe Arcbduke Charles to
bis kingdom ; tbe last mentioned being tbe entry into Madrid
of tbe Earl of Galway, wbo commanded tbe allied forces of
Portugal, and wbo, advancing into Spain, captured Alcantara,
Ciudad Rodrigo, and Salamanca, and entered Madrid in triumph,
June, where be proclaimed Charles king.

No specimen of this medal has been met witb. It appears
to be a copy, with slight variations, of the preceding, and was
probably executed by Christian Wermuth.

MB. j?R, . . . . . . . Very rare.
Tbe date of this medal points to tbe siege of Ostend, wbicb
surrendered to those constellations, Marlborough and Overkirk,
of tbe year 1706, after a short but vigorous attack. Tbe
citizens were friendly to tbe cause of tbe Arcbduke ; the taking
of tbe town was, therefore, a deliverance, not a mère change of
service. Overkirk is well coupled here witb Marlborough ; for
his cordial co-operation was strikingly contrasting witb the
jealousy of Slangenberg and other generals of tbe Confederation.
