X H I S gr o w s o n the barks of aih trees, in patches of various
figures, and>_ according tö its age, from an inch to a foot
in diameter. It is, whilft young and growing, .of a greenilh
aih colour,- when old or dried, of a pale duiky aih coloür.
It confifts of numerous Sphaeria clofe thruft together, the
largeft occupying the middle part; their fize gradually
diminiihing towards the margin, on every fide. Each feparate
Sphaeria, of the general aggregate, contains from two to fix
fphseruls, at firft filled with a white gelly, afterwards with
black feeds; and after the difcharge of thefe feeds, the empty
veflels remain open for many months., The plant is figured of
its natural fize, as it grew on a piece of aih bark, at a. A few
feparate Sphsria, before the-opening of the feed veflels, are
magnified at b. A fingle one is cut horizontally,' and laid open
at e. to ihew the white fubftance of the plant within; and the
difpofition of the black fphasrulae, sas they lie imbedded in it.
