' 9 ^HE fpecimens before me, grow on heaps of Bryum fcoparium, which have been
JL fome time "dead, and aie turning to a~wet mould, or vegetable earth. •
;, The figure is round or oval, in feme oblong, or pointed on one fide. The external
covering, in the young plants, is of a foft fubftance, and a reddilh colour-; in the older
fpecimens, this outer cohering is fallen off, and the inner is of a moufe colour, and a
ihining furface. The root confifts of two or three downy filaments, by which it adheres
to the foft fpungy matter upon which it grows. On being touched, or gently preffed, it
ejeits a fine 'duft or powder, of a pale pink colour, from various frnall perforations in.
feveral parts of the furface. This powder, under GUFF'S firit magnifier, appeared
to be a ipherical f e ed.—Grows in woods about Halifax.

' I VHIS grows on the leaves of cabbage, when in a moift, decayed ftate, and reduced
J[ to a kind of llippery mucilage ; they are found, in the greatefl: plenty, where
feveral folds of the leaves lie over each other, and grow ion every fold. In their firft
fiage they are white, gelatinous', tranfparent, and the fize of a muftard feed, äs at a.
from which they change to a reddiih brown,-of various degrees, as is exprefled in the
figure. When full grown they are thfe fize of a lentil,- and turn quite black: As it approaches
decay, it becomes hollow in the centre,^ as at. d. Its root is a fingle white filament.——
It is very common about Halifax.
