IT adheres to fmall twigs and branches of trees, when fallen in môiit
places and become putrid. It adheres to them by the curved bafe
of the ftem, without vifible fibres. The ftem is the thicknefs of an
hair, and more than half an inch long; it is of .a blackïlh colour
under the eye, but between the eye and the light, of a beautiful crimfon
; it is upright and fmooth while the plant is in vigour, loon after it
is taken up it dries, becomes comprefied and twined, as at a. The
çlub is white, half an inch long, obtufe above and below, as expreffed
on the plate. It is magnified, in different degrees, at b. b.

A I AHIS arifes fingly or in clufters, from a very fmall root, which is-
J l furnifhed with numerous downy fibres. The branches are fmall
. nearthe bafe, " increafing in thicknefs upwards,, and, in their afcent, are
divided and fubdivided into numerous branches, all of which are;
lopped off" at top, with abroad termination, which is often decorated
. with fmall rifing points round the margin. J Sometimes ,the margin is
dentated or crenated, it is moil commonly of a yellow or golden
eolour, but fometimes- varies to white or purple.
Grows in barren paftures, about Halifax. Does not the figure
in. Vaill. Paris, t.. 8. fig. 4. which, he calls Clavaria- coralloi^es^ belong
to this*plant i "
