n p H I S isa fmall, black, oblong tubercle, the fize of a fmall
flea j it is prominent, and has a deep^furrow along the
hack, from end to end, by which it feems as if cloven in two,
but the halves are joined together at the bafe. a. is the natural
fize of the plant; , at b. it is magnified till the black pun&ures,
which indicate the fphasrulas underneath, are vifi'ble; at c. it
is cut horizontally, and laid open, to ihew the difpofuion of
the fphaerulas, orpttie fphisrical feed veffels; at d. it is. cut perpendicularly
for the fame purpofe. The plant, under the
double magnifier, appeared like a bivalve ihell, when clpfed
and feen in front.
Groys about Halifax, in feveral places, on twigs and
branches of aih trees,, when ini decay.
Poffibly the Lichens, fcriptus and hebraicus, may belong to
this Genus; but of this I have not made fufficient obfervation,
nor whether thefe two are only varieties of the above.
