the gardens surrounding it had been assigned to us,
and here the baggage animals had already assembled
and been unladen, the tents pitched, and everything
put in order. Great crowds filled the road and peered
over every wall and from every window, staring with
open mouths at the harmless strangers whom they had
been taught to believe were devils. It must be remembered
that but very few of these people had ever seen a
European before. The crowd almost blocked the road,
but a way was made by the usual noisy and important
policemen, who, carrying heavy whips, struck wildly to
the right and left, taking care, however, that the lash
should only fall on the smallest children, and'preferably
on the naked ones.
