C Part of specimen of VAR. pauciflora from Bloktan, near Jongri.
F i g . 9 is incorrect, and should be neglected.
T h i s account of P. megalantha is based on the examination of 101 separate
specimens of VAR. typica and 13 separate specimens of VAR. pauciflora. Analyses of
Howers from 33 different gatherings of VAR. tijpica and from 4 gatherings of VAR.
pauciflora have been made. This species appears to be truly annual. The corolla varies
i n colour; in all Western Himalayan specimens it is pale yellow; Don speaks {I.e.)
d o u b t f u l l y , but probably correctly, of the lip in Nepalese specimens a3 being yellowishred,
the rest of the corolla being purple ; Hooker describes the corolla in Sikkim
specimens as rose-pm'ple. King's native collectors note the Pun-ka-be-see-mo and the
Lu-tna-poo gatherings as having pale pink corollas; the other Chuinbi specimens, and all
t h e specimens of VAR. paueijlora, have dark purple corollas, those of the latter havhig

Dr. Garcke of Berlin has very kindly sent to Calcutta authentic specimens of P.
Ihfmeisferi Klotzsch, which is reduced in the Flora of British India to P. siphonantha;
t h e y show, as Mr. Maximowicz had already suggested [Mel. Biol. x, 82, footnote 8), that
K l o t z s c h ' s species is a form of P. megalantha VAR. typica.
