this is larg-or and less pointed: moreover, it is rufous-tomentoso, while the fruit of M. iners
is pale yellowish-f^reen and almost glabrous.

11. MVEISTICA CR.^.SSA, n. sp. King. A tree 40 to 60 feet high; young branches
rather stout, very dai-k-colourcd, glabrous. Leaves coriaceous, oblong, elliptic-oblong
or oblanceolate-obloug, sub-acute, the base cuneate; both surfaces glabrous, the lower
pale, sub-glaucous; main nerves, 15 to 22 pairs, slightly prominent, spreading; length
7 to 12 in., breadth 2'5 to 4 in,; petiole 1 to ]-25 in,, stout. Male Jloivers in manyflowered,
sessile umbels from short, woody, axillary peduncles; pedicels -35 in. Ion"-,
tomeutose like the flowers; bracteole orbicular-ovate, rugose, closely embracing half
the flower on one side. Perianth minutely rusty-tomcntose, ovoid when young, urceolate
and slightly constricted below the middle when adult, the apex pointed, 3.cleft to
about a third of its length, tliR teeth ovate-acute; andrceciim narrowly ovoid,
apiculate; anthers U to 18, linear, closely attached to the coluoiii; stalk of column
often nearly as long as itself, lepidote. Female flowers unknown. FriUi solitary or
in clusters of 2 or 3, pedunculate, ovoid-globose, slightly pointed, the base rounded
or sub-truncate, minutely rufous-puberulous, l-o to 3 in. long and half as much in
diameter; pcricarp thick, succulent; arillus fleshy, laciuiate, yellow, extending to tho
apex of the ovoid seed.

The fruit is eaten by the Chinese settlers. I have named thii
thickness and soft texture of the pericarp. The arillus and seed
fragrance.

12. MYRISTICA LOWIANA, n. sp. King. A tree GO to 80 feet high; glabrous, except
the inflorescence and fruir; young branches rather stout, rough, dark-colourcd. Leaves
coriaceous, oblong to clliptic-oblong, sometimes slightly obovate; apex acutc, the base
ouneate or sub-cuneate, often slightly unequal; upper surface shining, the lower
dull, sub-glaucrous; nerves 16 to 20 pairs, prominent on both surfaces (impressed on
the upper), evanescent towards the margin; length 6 to 10 in., breadth 1-7.5 to 3 in.;
petiole -75 to 1 in,, stout. Male flowers in donse, many-flowered glomerul

than the petioles, from small solitary tubercles in the axiis of leaves or of fallo
leaves;
