306 THE SPECIES OF MYIÍISTICA
Singapore: Wallkh, CalUg No. 41, Bidk). Malacca: Eant,J, Mamjay (Km
Dhtrit. Nos. 1390, 1293, 1303, 1303, 1306), Ridki/. Peuaug: CtHis Nos. 487 & 804.
Perak: common at elevations under 500 feet.
VAB. major, Einn. Young brandies ratlier darker coloured tlian in tlie typical
foi-m ; leaves 5 to 7 in. long, larger than the typical form and :nore
glaucous bencatli, the nerves more distinct on the lower surface ;
male panicles rather longer (2-0 to 3 in.) ; the flowers larger (-15 in
long); fruit larger (-7.5 to 1 in. long), and scarcoly ridged on the
side opposite tlie groove.
Malacca: Grijlth {Kev} JDktrih. No. 4355). Perak : Kind's Collector Nos. 6548,
6632, 6736 & 7928; Wmg Nos. 2399 & 369o.
The variety may possibly be a distinct species, bnt the male flowers ai-e so like
those of true M. A-jularmm, Wall., that it seems desirable to consider it as a variety
The female flowers, when found, may possibly afliord some specific character. As regards
loaves, the variety forms a oomiecting liuk with the little-knom species M. GriMthU
Hook. fil.

This is closely allied to M. GrifdMi, Hook, fil., and to M. Fariiulm-iana, Wall.; bat
it iias larger leaves, of thinner texture, which dry of a moro purplish-brown colour,

and have more numerous, more prominent, spreading nerves, which leave the midrib
at a less acute angle. An unnamed species from New Guinea [Forles Nos. 329 & 375)
also approaches this very closely.
