^^ DIASNOSIS; DISTEIBUTION.
TABLE Y.—Comparison of the system of Mr. Maximotvicz with that now proposed.
Tribe 1.—LOXGIROSTRES.
1. Sipbonanthie.
2. LoEgirostres verticillata.
Tribe II.—RHYSCHOLOPH.E.
Tribe III.-TKRTICILLAT.I!.
Tribe IV.—BIDEKTAT.®.
Tribe V.—ASODOKT.Ì;.
Present system.
Divisioo I.—LoNGinOSTRES.
§ Siphonantlire.
§§ Orthoi-rliynchie.
Division II.—ADUNC.®.
§§§ nbynobolopbte.
Division III —EROSTRUS.
§§§§§ Anodontce.
The tribe LONGIROSTRES of tlie first column is almost the exact equivalent of the
division of the same name even in its subdivisions, for the section SIPHONANRNJE consists
of the major portion of Mr. Masimowicz' sub-tribe of the same name along with those
few opposite or whorled-leaved species that have circiunate beaks, wliile the section
ORTHOiiKHYNcn^E is exactly equal to the sub-tribe LONGIROSTRES VERTICILLAT^E for which a
new descriptive name is proposed in order to indicate that here it is accorded sectional
rank. The tribes RHYNCHOLOPHIE and BIDENTAT.E are here treated as sections belonging
to one division, since they occupy the same position as regards each other that the
sections SLPIIONASTHJE and ORTHOERitYNCIIiE mutually occupy, and together bear the same
relation to ANODONTCE that the SIPHONANXRIIE and ORTHORRIIYNCH^E together bear to
llHtNCHOLOPiUE. Finally, the tribe ANODONT^ is practically the equivalent of the division
EROSTRES, the latter, however, including in its single section ANODONTJE not merely the
alternate-leaved species that constitute the ANODONT.A: of Mr. Maximowicz, but the majority
of the species contained in the tribe VERTICILLATA. Practically, therefore, the only great
alteration in the system now proposed is the suppression of the tribe VBRTTCILLAT.®, The
reasons for so doing have been already given, and the act is only an extension to
the rest of the genus o£ the treatment that Mr. Maximowicz has already shown to be
necessary for the verticillate Longirostres. The destination of the series that constitute
the artificial tribe VERTICILLATA is as follows •.—Mijrio^hyllai to § ROYNCHOLOPII/E ;
Platyrrhynchm, Suinrlce, and Lyratai to § BIDENTAT^ ; Cheilmthifolm, Verticilhtw, and
Oaucasicce to § ANODONT^.
CHAPTER IV.—GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION.
.THE genus is restricted to the NORTHERN FLORA, and its species are almost entirely
confined to the areas inhabited by its Arctic-Alpino secondary Flora, although a few are
extended in, or even confined to, the areas marked by the Northern Temperate-intermediate
