SIPHONA.NTH^.
Mr. Maximowicz-in {Mel. Biol, x, 82) diagnosed P.
i follows:—
111
from F. labellaia
filaments glabrous, beak shorter than the 2-dentat9 galea, whole plant
a span high p, rhinanthoidcs ;
anterior fllamonts liu'snte, beak longer than the edentulous galea . . P. .
adding to the diagnosis in 1888 {Mel. Biol, xii, 786), as i-egards F. rhinanthoides,
" v e r y like F. labellata." The original plant is not at CNlcuttu, but specimens from
Sairam, Turkestan, collected by Mr. A. Kegel and named by Mr. Maximowicz have
been examined. In these the anterior stamens are hirsute, as MM. Fischer and Meyet
say they found them in Schrenk's specimens and not, as Bunge tells us he found
them {I.e. 276),' all glabrous. In Griffith's specimens, (Joiir. 1060), the anterior
stamens are hirsute, and not, as M. Boissier {I.e.) indicates, all glabrous. The hairs
on the filaments of VAR. typiea are not numerous, but appear to be usually present;
I have not found them once absent in 23 individual corollas analysed. Thus the
principal diagnostic character fails. Nor do any of the other characters hold •
Himalayan specimens of "P. labellata" vary a great deal in size, but have the beak
very uniformly twice the length of the hood, while specimens from Phari (of -which
I have examined 11), though not exceeding 12 cm. in height, have the beak
thrice the length of the hood. On the other hand, the gathering from Bamsor
(Duthie 576) consists of dwarf specimens with the short beak of VAB. typiea, hut
with the densely hairy anterior filaments of "P. labellata" Among the 48 specimens
of "P. labellata" in the herbaria of Calcutta and Saharanpur examined by me, 43
have edentulous corollas, 4 have the thi-oat 2-auriculate (a flower from one of these
is shown in Plate 1, fig. 8), and one from Zaiang Karpo in Karnag collected by
Dr. Stoliczka has the throat on both sides very distinctly toothed, the teeth being
much longer than in any specimen of P. siphonantha, a species in which this chai-acter
is a normal one. It is not tliereforo possible to consider hihslldin specifically separable
from P, rhinaTttJtoides.
Dr. Griffith's Hadji-gak plant, referred by Mr. Bentham to JSiepJms Boissier in
1846, is by Boissier himself, so recently as 1879, only doubtfully placed there. And
this cannot be its position, since Boissier describes P. Jlleplm as having the apex of
the beak 3-fid, whereas the apex of beak in Griffith's plant, which agrees completely
with Fischer and Meyer's description of F. rUnathnia, and is precisely the same as
A. Eegol's Sairam specimens, is entire. Genaine F. Elephm, on the other hand, cannot
be satisfactorily diagnosed from P. siflmmtlm. But another Griffithiiin specimen 'referred
by Bentl.am U. to P. UldlaU is not that plant, but is P. npkmuia TAK, h-aituba •
consequently P. labellata Boiss. (I.e. 489), which depends on this specimen alone is not
same^as P. labellata Jucq., but is = P. siphonajitha Don. Sir J. D. Hooker, ¡.c. 313
reduces P . labellata to P . the following are the diagnostic characters of
tho two species:—
calyx 5-toothed, margin of lip eciiiate, lobes not emarginate, basal
portion of hood inclined forward, beak entire at apes
calyx 3-toothed, margin of lip cHiate, midlobe emarginate, basal
portion of hood erect, beak S-fid at apex
