66 HISTORICAL ACCOTT.N-T; CONSPECTUS APFINITATUII,
The conspectus of affiaities of the Indian species in the next chapter is based on an
oxaminatioa of 181 speeiea preserved in the Calcutta Herbarium, but it could not have
been made so complete had it not been for the existence of the two synopses of the
genus, already so frequently quoted, prepared by Mr. Maximowicz in 1877 and 1888
respectively. These two articles are so excellent that after the closest study one is left
in doubt whether to admire most the minuteness of description and fidelity to detail
that they display, or the keen appreciation of affinities and clearness of exposition that
cliaracterise them.
In this conspectus there are here and there instances of a slightly different disposition
of individual species. This is to some extent due to the present coiispcctus having
been mainly di-awn up before the appearance of Mr. Masimowicz's newer synopsis. And
so because Mr. Maximowicz's revision is of such a nature that any attempt to supplement
it or proposal to alter it might easily become an impertinence, also because an independent
complementary view may prove of some use to other students of the genus, but not
because the present arrangement claims to be more natural than that of Mr. Maximowicz,
nor because it is not open to modification in many places, it is issued practically as it
stood before the appearance of Mr. Maximowicz's paper of 1888. The Indian species
are indicated by a heavier type.
