these two Wallicliian species. In the abseace, liowover, of speoimens o! G. diihotonnin it i
either to reoogaiss that as a species, or to join it to one or other o£ its near allies. Now
from what has been domonstratod above it will be seen that undei' the name " 0. parvifforun"
it is in reahty a form of G. criniium that Bentham and Miquel (who follows Bentham olosely)
are comparing with G. diohotomim. And as the character whoroin G. dichotomum is said
by them alone to difíer from this form of G. a'iiiUiwi, coupled with the character implied in the original
description gives us two out of the throe points wherein trae G. parviflortm alone diiiers from this form
of G. crinitum, it oppears manifest that (?. dichotommi must at present be looked upou as conspecifio with
true G. parviflomm.
With the gathering of G. criniium from Tavoy, to which since 1S29 that name had been restricted,
Sh Joseph Hooker has (188J) associated a somewhat difEerent-Iooking but undoubtedly conspecifio plant
collected by Dr. Griffith in Malacca. This is G. oHinlum VAR. Gri^t/iii of the present paper.
In the gi'oup Parvifiora there is evidently a very great diflerenee in the rank of the varioiis forms
separated. The only distinctly separable plant is G. microcalyx (though even as regards this~p. 251 union
with another form has been suggested), and it is very probable that only a few more gatherings from
intermediate localities wU be required to provide the intermediate forms necessary to prove that all the
others are simply local manifestations of one protean species. And while the absonoe of these prevents the
writer from formally proposing the necessary reductions, the time appears to have come for indicating the
probable natm'e of these. If only floral eharaoters are attended to, we can recognise but two species,
