B—Specimen from Pangl.
C— ,, of subvar. ^'spedosa^' from Jongri.
This account of P. RoijM Is based on an examination of 161 speclmsns. The species
In habit and foliage closely resembles P. mrtidUatt, which is, howe7or, distinct. The
diagnosis is as follows :—
Lraota pinnatisect or -partite, calyx deeply tootLed hardly cleft upper tooth
entire the others serrate, coroUa tube hent in middle obtusely, filaments
inserted near middle of tube all glabrous, anthers cynte acute, capsule
ovate acuminate half esserted, seeds 1-25 mm,, pals, distinctly reticulated P. Itot/iei ;
bracts ovate subentire, oalys hardly toothed cleft to the raiddla margin
entire, corolla tube abruptly bent at junction of middle and lower
third, filaments inserted opposite fop of ovary anterior pair hirsute,
nutbers broadly elliptic muticous, capsule lanceolate acute more than
half esserted, seeds 2 mm. nigrescent minutely reticulated .„ p. v^-HicUkl'i.
Kelohenbach's figure of P. „ertidllab [Icon. Fl Germ. i. 1762, /. 1—14), which
Is In other respects good, nnfortunatcly gives the anterior filaments glabrous, v^hich is
erroneous. Lange (_Boi. Tidskr. Kjob. It, t 2, / . 3) has given a Tery exact figure of the
seeds of P . virtkilhta, which arc remarkably unlike those of P. Boijlei fcf. Plate 37).
I have in this case avoided giving a varietal definition of the typical plant because
the striking form from Jongi-I, which has been received twice from the same locality
(September 1887, and again September 1888), does not appear to differ by any other
character than the much larger flowers. It has not yet been collected in fruit and
is only tentatively advanced as a sub-variety. It is mt, as the artist nnfortumtely
has indicated {fig. C.), 2-denticulate below the apes.
The character of discrete or contiguous anthers (cf. figs. 8 and 9) relied on by Dr. Regel
and others in the diagnosis of P . vertìdllata Is, I find, of no value in this species.

Specimen from Esan-nan-gi, Jongri.
The account of P. jiifc™ Is based on an examination of 75 specimens This
mtcresting little spccies was never reported till 1887. In that and In the following
season. Dr. lirng's collectors met with It, and communicatod large suites of specimens"
Perhaps its most strikmg character is Its ovulatIon-(3 ovules to each placenta 4 to
each loculo) ; it Is, however, undoubtedly a P . « ™ . Although it has to be 'placed
alongside of P. folygaldd,,, it is also closely related to P. pjgm^a, which has, however
different bracts and leaves, has the corolla tube bent lower down, the galea apiculate'
and all the filaments glabrous. Then tho lanceolate capsule, the very lar<re hardly'
pitted, dark-coloured seeds, and the long.petloled ovate leaves recall P. /„,',„„ ami
appear to indicate considerable affinity with the group to which that speclos beÌon.rs
One featm-e of Interest m this spccies is the apparent fondness of some insect for
Its anthers. In nearly every gatlierlng tho upper part of the galea conlaiulno- tho
anthers has been bitten off from some of tho flowers, and in some eases Smost
every flower has been treated like this. The same thing has been noticed lu no other
Indian species.
