This species is very closely allied to G. parciflorum, but is easily recognised by its tliiuDer leaves,
asb-grey tomentum, smaller bracts aud very long subulate calyx teetb. Tlio Tavoy gathering [Wall. Cat. n.
2159/2) differs from n. 2169/1 (2158/0) in bavÍBg only condensed whorls—a character of no importance,
since in other gatheriugs dense and las whorls occur in tho same specimen, aod in having glabrous
calyces—a simple accidant, the specimens being fruiting ones and the tomentum being deciduous in
fruit; the gathering is not specifically distinct from 2159/1, which should not bays been referred by
Dr. Wallioh to G. parvijloruni unless he was prepared to suppress the species G. crinitum altogether.
This is a course which has much to he said in its favour, but it is not followed here, mainly
bceause of the necessity for uniform treatment throughout the genus; partly also because the diagnosis
between O. crinitum and G. parviflorum is not very diiBcult, aud because the wri.er has not as
yet seen any good ooDnecting specimens, even though the geographical areas of the two species overlap
: moreover, the synonymy of' the two species, which has become rather involved, is more easily
disentangled if they he kept apart. The process is simplified by tabular presentation, and in TABLE XI I I
ai'e given the names that tho "Walliehian specimens bear in the Lithographed Catalogue, and in
Mr. Bentham's, in Sir Joseph Hooker's, and in the present treatise respectively. The infoi-mation in
columns has been very kindly supplied by Mr. Homsley. The references of Dr. Walpers (1845) being
a mere reprint of (hose of llr, Bentham of 1835, and those of Dr. Miquel (1856) being an adaptation
of those of Ifr. Bentham of 1848, possess no intrinsic value, and aro therefore omitted. The use
of the name"G. multidorum" in Herb. Linn. Soc. to designate typical G. pan-ifljrum is evidently a
change that has been made since 1848, for in that year (as in 1835, when he founded the species G muHiflorum,)
Mr. Bentham only included in G. JHu/h^vrKm specimens that belong to TAB./NY-IHOSA; those
tl¡at belong to G. parcifloixm VAB. typica were left by him to serve, in part, as types of G. parviflorum, though
he included in that species (as Dr. WaUich had previously done) two gatherings that belong to 0. crinitum.
It should further be noted that thero is nothing in the description of G, dichotomum Zoll. et Mor. to separate
that plant positively either from G. parviflorxim or from O. crinitum. In the absence of specimens and for
reasons detailed below, I have ventured tentatively to suggest its inclusion in G. pamflorum.
