-tomentose; buds globose, on pedicels -05 in. long, ebracteolate; perianth glabrous, thin, divided
half-way into 3 or 4 broad triangular acute toeth. Andrcecium sessile, depressed-globose,
obtusely 3 or 4-angled; anthers 12 to 15, narrowly ovoid, much iucurvcd at either
end, confluent. Female Jlnvers unknown; the youug fruits in short, solitary, 8 to 10-
floTvered racemes. Ripe fruit in lax racemes of 3 to 5, -75 to 1 in. long, ovoid, slightly
flattened, ridged along the suture, sub-glabrous; poricarp fleshy; pedicel about -So in.
l o n g ; arillus fleshy, entire, not laciniate or areolate, enveloping the whole of the shining

27. MIRÍSTICA RUBIGINOSA, n. sp. King. A tree 20 to SO feet high; yoimg branches
stout, at fii-st densely rufous-tomentose, ultimately deeply striate, tomentoso on the rido-es
and glaucous in the furrows. Leaves large, thinly coriaceous, elliptic-oblong, very shortly
a n d suddenly acuminate, or blunt, the edges slightly recinved when dry, base rounded
or very slightly cuneate; upper surface deeply reticulate, rugulose, scabrid from numerous
short, stiff, branching, rusty hairs; the midrib and nerves rusty-tomentosej glabrescent
when old; lower surface densely and uniformly covered with bright, reddish-brown,
stellate tomentum, the reticulations prominent; main nerves 16 to 19 pairs, spreading
a n d arching within the margin, prominent on the lower, depressed on the upper surface";
l e n g t h 10 to 12 in., breadth 4 to 5 5 in. ; petiole -1 to -25 in., tomentoso. Male panicles
f r om the axils of leaves or of fallen leaves, 7 to 9 in- long and 2'5 to 3 in. broad

glabrous, globular, -Oo in. in diam., in small crowded racemes at the apices of the

when young densely clothed with thick, felted, bright rufous tomentum; when old subglabrous,
striate, rough and cinereous. Leaves large, coriaceous, ohlong-Ianceolate or
oblanceolate, sub-acute or acute, the edges revolute whcu dry; the base rounded or
s l i g h t l y cuneate; npper surface hispid-puberulous ; the midrib and nerves flocculenttomentose
when young, but ultimately glabrous; lower densely covered with pale rufoua,
stellate, flocculent tomentum, the edges recurved when dry; main nerves 15 to 20 pairs.

flocculent rufous-tomentose. Flowers -1 in. long, ovoid-globose, slightly obovoid, inflated,
pedicelled, ebracteolate, glabresccnt; the perianth thin, its teeth 3 or 4, rather shallow,
a c u t e ; pedicels 2 to -25 in. long, slender, glabrous. Andrcecium sub-sessile, obovate, its
apex truncate, non-apiculate; anthers about 10, elongate, confluent. Female flowers
unknown.

more in height; young branches stout, rather rough, of a dark-grey colour, the youngest
minutely rusty-tomentose. Leaves coriaceous, oblong and acute, or rarely elliptic and
blunt, the base sub-truncate, emai-ginate, or sub-cuneato; upper surface shining, greenishbrown,
glabrous; lower surface rufous-brown, loosely and deciduously stellate-tomentose;
main nerves 16 t o 22 pairs in the oblong, but only 10 to 12 in the elliptic forms, stout,

forms 6 to 8 in., breadth about 4 in. ; length of the oblong forms 10 to 14 in.,

long, stout, spreading, rufous-tomentose, axillary or from the axils of fallen leaves,
many-flowered; flowers glabrous, globose, -1 in. long, ebracteolate, on very short
tomentose pedicels, in compact globose clusters of 8 to 10; perianth flesliy, glabrous,
sometimes granular, teeth 3 or 4, triangular, acute; andrcecium sessile, obovate-globose,
t h e apex depressed, deeply 3-cleft; anthers about 15, incurved, confluent. Female panicles
stouter and much shorter than the male and fewer-flowered, the flowers larger; perianth
coriaceous, tomentose externally at the base, otherwise glabrescent, teeth 3, spreading;
ovartj globose, sessile, glabrous; stigma sessile, small, linear. Fruit (quite young) ovoid,
smooth, on a short stout pedicel, the slightly enlarged perianth persistent at its base.

A species very imperfectly rejjresented in collections. It was first issued by Wallieh
a s No. 6806 of his catalogue, doubtfully under the name of M. Uorsfieldia, Blume
(which it is not), and with the remark "forsan duce species mixta;:' There were really

Joseph Hooker, being M. crassifolia, H. f. & Th., and M. polyspherula, H. f.
