stcllate-haii-y like the pedicel, inside glabrous, ridged; staminal disc -very small, slightly
concave, orbicular, 8ub-3-augled, lobed, glabrous; anthers 6 to 10, sessile, sub-erect; stalk
cylindric, as long as the perianth tube. Female flowers sessile, in shortly but stoutly
pedunculate 4 to 6-fiowered axillary umbels; buds ovoid, lobes of perianth ovate, blunt,
externally rufous stellate-tomentose; internally glabrous; ovary sessile, ovoid-conic,
rusty-tomentose, style shorter than the ovary, cylindric, glabrous ; stigma of 2, rounded
compressed, erect lobes. Fruit in pairs or solitary, axillary, shortly peduncled, subobovoid
or ovoid, slightly pointed, slightly ridged, 1 to 1-5 in. long, -75 to 1 in. in diam. •

VAR. monticola, King. Leaves smaller (6 to 10 in. long), their bases sub-acute or
rounded, nerves rather fewer (18 to 22), petioles longer (-5 to -To in.)
and rather slender ; male flowers almost sessile, on slightly elongated
•warted peduncles; stalk of staminal disc rather longer than in the
typical form.
Perak: at elevations of 2,500 to 3,8<lO feet, King's Collector, Scorieehini, Wray.
A variety fuund only in the hills. The anthers are arranged on a staminal column
resembling that of Irya, but having a stalk as in Eumyristica.

45. MYRISTICA KUNSTLERI, n. sp. King. A tree 30 to 50 feet high; young branches
slender, slightly and minutely rusty-tomentose at first, quickly becoming rather dark and
glabrous. Leaves glabrous, thinly coriaceous, much reticulate when dry, elliptic or ellipticoblong,
sometimes ovate, shortly and rathei' bluntly acuminate or acute, occasionally
obtuse, the base cuoeate or rounded, slightly unequal; upper surface shining, pale
greenish when dry, lower sub-glaucous, of a dull brownish white with numerous
small brown dots, aub-lacunose, the lateral nerves and midrib prominent and brown,
minutely scurfy; nerves 7 to 10 pairs, spreading, arching within the margin; length
3 to 7 in., breadth 1-5 to 3 in.; petiole -5 to '75 in. Male flowers in 4 to 12-flowercd
umbels from short, woody, axillary tubercles; pedicels '3 to "4 in., slender, the minute
bracteole about the middle; buds -1 to 'lo in. in diam., depressed-globose; segments
of perianth fleshy, broadly-triangular, concave, glabrous within, minutely tomentose
externally, as are the pedicels; staminal disc small, sub-rotund, obscurely 3-angled, flat,

glabrous; anthers 9 to 12 with filaments attached to edge of disc, short, ovate, horizontal,
dehiscing downwards; stalk very short, cylindric. Female flotoer unknown; ovary (after
fertilization) sessile, ovoid, narrowed above, rugulose; style very short, glabrous, stigma
with 8 short conical spreading lobes. Fruit usually solitary, sometimes in clusters of
2 or 3, asillai-y, pedunculate, -75 to 1 in. long by '5 to '75 in. in diam., broadly ovoid,
slightly apiculate; the stigma persistent, slightly nai-rowed at the base, minutely rugulose
and rufous-pubescent; pericarp thickly coriaceous; arillus thin, enveloping the fruit,
slightly 5 or 6 lobed at the very apex-

46. MYRISTICA COSFERTA, n. sp. King. A tree 60 to 80 feet high; young branches
rather stout, pale brown, striate, glabrous; the youngest densely covered with short,
stellate, rusty tomentum. Leaves oblong or narrowly elliptic, acute; the base rounded
or slightly cordate; both surfaces minutely reticulate; the upper glabrous, shining;
the lower, when young, and especially tho nerves, with minute loose scurfy tomentum,
ultimately glabrescent and sub-glaucous; main nerves conspicuous below,
about 15 to 20 pairs, spreading; length 5 to 7*5 in., breadth 1-75 to 2-25 in.
Male flowers in densely crowded axillary clusters of 20 to 30; pedicels -3 to '4 in. long,
tawny-pubescent, the bracteole about the middle. Perianth sub-globose, depressed,
bluntly 3-angled; the teeth broadly triangular, acute, fleshy, concave, stellate-tomentose
externally, glabrous within; staminal disc very concave at first; the anthers 15, with
short filaments, at fii-st erect and slightly recurved at the apex, afterwards radiating 0,nd
sub-horizontal, and the disc flat; stalk cylindrical below, rapidly widening upwards into
the disc, striate, minutely hairy, especially at the base. Female flowers larger than the
males, but in smaller clusters, slightly obovoid; perianth with 3 short sub-acute teeth ;
ovanj depressed-globose, rufous-tomentose; stigma sessile with 3 spreading acute lobes.
Fruit axillary, solitary, ovoid, blunt, I'O in. long and about M in. in diam,, shortly
rufous-pubescent when young, glabrescent when ripe; pericarp rather dry, about '2 in.
thick, splitting vertically when ripe; seed ellipsoid, pointed; arillus covering the whole
seed, minutely laciniatc at the apex,

Allied to M. lavrina, Blume; but distinguished from that species by Its more

slender, rather pale; all parts glabrous except the inflorescence. Leaves thinly coria- '
ceous, narrowly elliptic or elliptic-oblong, acute or sub-acute, rarely sub-acuminate;
the base rounded, sometimes emarginate or sub-cuneate, never cordate; upper surface
shining; the lower dull, whitish grey; the midrib and 13 to 17 pairs of spreading
