KOTE ON THE ILLUSTRATIOIfS.
I n Gen. Plant, i!, 9i9 (1876) the genus Adenosma R. Br. (1810) is restored. T!,e
nao^e Adfnosma Nees (IS4?) therefore falls, aiul Bentham has issued the aUernative name
C a s d a k t h e r a Ham.
E x p l a k a t o k v Note on the Illusteations.
T h e isothermal line on the map illustrating the sreographieal distribution of Pedicularis
IS traiislmeated from a map in Keith-Johnston's Physical Atlas. It appears there as
t h e mean summer isotherm of 59°F.
_ The TABtJLA AFPiiimTUii is an attempt to represent graphically the facts expressed
i n Chapter VI. It possesses all the advantages over the serial disposition of the
l i t e r a r y " conspectus that a representation in two dimensions must possess when comp
a r e d with a representation in one dimension, but at best the results obtained are
m e r e l y approximate.
I n the PL.VTES proper the figures of the various species are drawn by the native
a r t i s t s whose names appear in the left-hand corners. The analyses have in each case
b e e n made and delineated by the writer. These have been made as nearly uniform as
possible m all the species and explain themselves. The analyses are to be understood
us bemg made of flowers belonging to the particular plant of which a drawing is given •
t h e instances where this is not the case are indicated in tlie test. In plate 3.5C types
(amon g Indian species) of the various subsectional corolla-forms are placed side by side so
a s to assist the eye in understanding the passages on classification,' In p lates 36 and 37
t h e writer has attempted to extend to Indian species the treatment accorded to the seeds
of European and Asiatic species by Dr. Lange. They fall far short of the excellent
r e s u l t s obtained by that author, and it is to be hoped that Dr. Lange may one day
p r o v i d e a similar comparative view of the seeds of Chinese species. The value of seed
d i a r a c t e r s 2s very high; not for diagnosis, since so many species have similar seeds,
nor for general classification, since closely allied species have often such different
ones, but for the true limitation of the natural groups so characteristic of the genus.
