Several distinct, but nearly allied, species have been confounded together undei- the
name of Hyparete ; Donovan observed, “ W e have two sorts o f this sp e c ie s ; one with the
marginal row o f red spots on the posterior wings disposed in a deep border o f black ; tlie
other has the red spots on a whitish g-round. They are certainly the two sexes o f Papilio
Hyparete. Found near Canton, in Ch ina.” The sex es do not, however, vary in thi.s
respect, the latter individuals mentioned in this passage are therefore most probably the
