This curious insect is among the number o f those lately brought from China. A
figure o f the upper surface is represented on a lea f o f the Camellia Sesanqua, one o f the
vignette plates o f Sir G. Staunton’s History o f the late Embassy to that country ; a
coloured figure and a short account o f it may therefore prove acceptable to the readers of
his volumes.
Stoll has also giv en a figure o f it, and has also represented another sort, which he
con,riders as the female ( le tte r A ) - , it has no black points in the y e llow spots o f the
thorax and scutellum : he mentions the Isle o f Formosa as tlie native country o f his
sjiecimens.
Fabricius observes, that it varies according to the sex by having an acute spine on
each side o f the thorax, as represented in the accompanying figures ; this statement is,
however, denied in the Encyclopédie Méthodique, vol. x. p. 4 1 0 , by Messrs. Saint Fargeau
