Curculio Chinensis, D o n o v a n , 1st edit.
T h is insect seems nearly allied to Curculio mucorcus, an Indian species, described
by Linmeus. but not figured by any author ; the lateral stripe o f black, and the
denticulations on the posterior thigh s o f our insect clearly remove it, however, from
'^ 'T x c e p T t i r ia t e r a l black stripes, and the rostrum, this insect is totally covered with
a bright brown powder, or rather, with very minute hairs winch adhere but slightty,
and resemble that substance. W e observe a similar farinaceous appearance on the
CurcuUoncs, Lacteus, Niveuc, and especially on that gig antic beetle Scarabrntc
Elephas.
