This singular insect, and the plant on wliich it is represented, have an equal claim to
attention, both as objects o f natural curiosity, and importance in domestic economy. The
larva is an e legant and beautiful creature, and China is indebted to its labours for
the fine white wax so much esteemed in the East Indies. The plant is not less interesting,
as it produces the v egetable tallow, in general use throughout the Chinese
empire.
The novelty o f these productions could not fail attracting the notice o f those learned
Europeans who were first permitted to reside in China, and whose object was to promote
sciences and arts, as well as the Christian knowledge. Both the Wa x -in se c t and Tallow-
tree are spoken o f in their writings as extraordinary and peculiar advantages to tlie
country. Du Halde, e specially in his splendid work FHistoire de la Chine, treats
largely on these productions, in the sections Ctre blanche d 'ln se c te s et I arhre qui p o rte le
suif. His relations are, perhaps, too prolix, but they are evidently the result o f attentive
