brown, and those from Jamaica have less blue in the disk o f the lower wings than those
from China.” Donovan, however, clearly here mistook distinct species for varieties. The
American species thus named by Abbot and Smith is the P . Larinia o f Fabricius, and in
my copy o f the Entomologia Systematica, which belonged to Professor Weber, the companion
o f Fabricius, the words “ India orientali ” are introduced in lieu o f Jamaica.
Papilio Clelia o f Cramer, which is found on the coast o f Guinea, has been supposed a
variety o f Papilio Orythia. Fabricius, in the Entomologia Systematica, has made it a
distinct species. It greatly resembles P . Orythia, but has no more blue colour on the
posterior wings than is concentrated in a large spot near the base.

Donovan regarded this as a new species, g iv in g the following as the true Leucothoe
o f Linnæus. The description given by that author, and especially his notice o f the third
row o f spots in the posterior pair o f wings being composed “ ex maculis 7 albis puncto
nigro fretis,” clearly applies to this and not to the following insect.
