common kinds in timt country we are at present unacquainted with. The locust is only
detrimental when in immense num bers; for in Cliina, as in other eastern countries, they
are considered as an article o f food, and regularly exposed for sale in the public

The phenomena resulting from the properties and effects o f light having engaged tlie
attention o f the earliest philosophers, we must conclude that phosphorical appeai-auces,
and those e specially o f animated bodies, could not fail to attract their particular notice.
Indeed it is evident from the writings o f the accurate observers o f nature in remote ages,
that they were acquainted with certain insects that have the property o f shining in the
night. These were known only by general terms, expressive o f that property ; yet it is
l>robable that some o f the Limisean Lampyrides, which are abundant in the south o f
Europe, as well as in Asia and some parts o f Africa, were tlie first o f tlie illuminated
