kingdom m a muddy foil, flowering in Auguft and September.
Root fibrous, annual. Stem ereft, angular, leafy, with upright
leafy branches. Leaves alternate, on footftalks, flat,
linear, blunt or fharp, various in length and breadth, whence
Dillenius has introduced two molt trivial varieties in Raii Syn.
*53 5 ^ e ir margin is fometimes quite, entire, but more generally
fet with fmall fcattered teeth, fometimes deeply
toothed or finuated, when it becomes the A. /errata of Hud-
fon. The under fide of the leaves, as well as the flowers and
young branches, are covered with a meally hoarinefs. Spikes
terminal, denfe, obtufe; fhort when in flower, afterwards
more lengthened out. We believe the hermaphrodite flowers,
in this (as in moll of our wild Oraches) generally do
not ripen any feed. The female ones on the contrary are
always fertile] their valves are after flowering much enlarged
ovate, deeply and irregularly finuated, furnilhed externally with
feveral large prominent pointed tubercles. The feed is flat
its cotyledons fomewhat fpiral.
The leaves turn black in drying, like many other fea plants.
