Totta—From Hottentot.
Gymnogramma totta is a very ra re F e rn in cultivation in
England. I t is a handsome species.
The fronds, which are ha iry , are lanceolate in form, and
from eighteen inches to two feet in len g th ; the colour is palish
g re en ; pinnate, pinnm sessile, oblong bluntish, pinnatifid, the
u p p e r ones being adnate; lobes blu n t, veins forked or pinnate,
the lower p a ir occasionally anastomosing. Rhizoma creeping
and scaly. Stipes scaly, terminal, and adherent.
The sori linear, simple, and sometimes very profuse.
In cultivation it requires a warm greenhouse.
I t is a native of Madeira, Cape of Good H o p e , and the
East Indies.
Forme rly, G. totta and G. L ow e ii were considered distinct
from each oth e r; the former being the In d ian form of it, and
the plan t described b y Schlechtendal; and the la tte r, which
was named after the Rev. Mr. Lowe, (a Botanist,) the Madeira
