Polypodium—Polypody. Hexagonoptera—Six-angled-winged.
T h e Polypodium hexagonopterum must be considered as one
of the rare cultivated species. In appearance it somewhat re sembles
our British P . Rohertianum and P . dryopteris. I t is a
desirable species, from its being a hardy P e rn , and no collection
should be without it; although even some of our larger collections
have it amongst th e ir desiderata.
A handsome, deciduous, h a rd y Pern.
A native of N o rth America.
In tro d u c ed into E n g la n d about the year 1811.
The fronds are of a triangula r form, bipinnatifid, pinnas opposite,
sessile, d e cu rren t at the base, the segments crenulate,
oblong-obtuse. Pro n d s lateral, ha iry , adherent to a creeping
rhizoma.
