Hymenophyllum—Membrane-leaved. Scabrum—RoMgh.
A BEAUTIFUL, Trichomanes-lookmg, greenhouse F e rn from
New Zealand.
I h e fronds, which are rig id and erect, are pinnate, ovate
in form, and acuminate; the pinnæ are bi-tripinnatifid and
acuminate, the segments entire and narrow; stems rough with
pale chaffy hairs.
L ength of frond twelve to eighteen inches.
Involucres small, terminal, somewhat orbicular, sessile, free,
and two-valved.
Allied to liymenophylliim demissum.
Requires a very humid, rather airy atmosphere, with a
temperature ranging between 40° and 65°.

T h e following Hymenophyllums and Trichomanes bave been recently
introduced by Mr. Backhouse, b u t although I have been unable as y et to
procure fronds of them, it has been deemed advisable before finishing tho
volume, to briefly enumerate each.
HTMEiSrOPHYLLUM ABE.UPTUM, Hoolcer.— k. dwarf F ern , with
broad, hluiit, pinnatifid fronds, on wiry stalks. Native of Jamaica, densely
carpeting mossy tranks and rocks. Fronds an inch and a h alf to two
inches in length. Figured by Sir W. Hooker, plate 31—B, vol. i, “ Species
Filicum.”
H YM EN O PH Y L LUM Æ RUG IN OSUM, Carmichael. Hooher. (Hy.
menopbyllum franklinianum, Coleiiso, Trichomanes æruginosum, Thoms.)—
A well-marked species, with ovate, dense, tripinnatifid fronds, covered with
a whitish pubescence. Native of New Zealand. Pen d en t from rocks and
trunks of trees. Fronds four to eight inches in length. There is a variety
with more acuminate fronds, and with more distinct pinnæ and divisions,
which is named var. fra n h lin ia nmn . Figured by Sir AY. J . Hooker, plate

Hedwig. {Hymenophyllum palmatum, Klotzsch.)—A delicate and p retty
Fern , with narrow, shining, pinnatifid fronds, on wiry stems. Native of
Jamaica and Brazil. Pendent from mossy rocks and trunks of trees. Length
of frond from two to five inches.
