T h i s remarkable variety of a handsome British species was
originally found in Ire lan d , but has since been raised from
spores in various ferneries. Its distinguishing features are the
truncated form of the fronds and pinnæ.
The frond terminates ab ru p tly .' The pinnæ are short, with
from three to four pairs of pinnules, terminating with a fan-
shaped pinnule, the remainder of the pinnules being palmately
lobed and deeply toothed.
Veins ramose; venules simple or furcate.
Sori sub-medial, almost marginal.
L ength of frond from nine to eighteen inches, breadth from
two to three inches. Colour deep green above, much paler
beneath. Stipes very scaly.
The coriaceous texture of the fronds, and their abrupt te rmination,
as well as those of the pinnæ and the palmately
lobed pinnules, render this highly interesting Porn very distinct.
For fronds my thanks are due to Mr. Stansfield, of Todmorden.
