i c h a e l . I t has been found occasionally in England by Mr R e l h a n
and Mr S o w e r b y ; and more recently in Oxfordshire, by Mr B a x t e r ,
the intelligent Curator of the Botanic Garden a t Oxford.
Gregarious. Receptacle imbedded in the substance of the wood or bark on
which it grows, with the summit exserted, at first closed and puncti-
form, at length opening, and becoming urceolate, furnished with a marginal,
spreading, broad, entire, or many-cleft limb, o f a snow-white colour,
and pulverulent surface. Sometimes the limb is nearly obsolete,
and the margin is then short, erect, and irregular. Hymenium even,
smooth, immersed in the receptacle, varying in colour from pale orange
to yellow or white. Sporidia minute, globose. The whole plant varies
in diameter from that of a pin’s head to little more than half that size.
