GEN ER IC CHARACTER.
Sphærulæ corneæ, cæspitosæ, liberæ, receptáculo insidentes, raro primo inclusæ ;
intus massa gelatinosa sporulifera instructoe.
Spherules corneous, clustered, free, fixed on a receptacle, rarely at first included.
Interior filled with a gelatinous sporuliferous mass.

mersis, dein erumpentibus, confertis, globosis, circa ostiolum papillceforme, annulato
depressis.
C. black ; stroma very long ; perithecia a t first immersed, at length sessile,
crowded, globose, orifice papilliform, with a circular depression around
it.

I t is not unfrequent on the moors and waste places about Edinburgh.

A variety occurs with few, somewhat scattered perithecia, and scarcely any
stroma. This is the var. simplex of F rie s , of which he has given a specimen
