lines of granules, the granules quadripartite.

Plant minutely tufted, forming a green velvety surface on the stone. Fronds
b right green, pellucid, 2-S lines in length, plane, linear, attemiated at
the base, conspicuously dotted with granules, which form longitudinal
lines rather than regular transverse bands : they are often curiously curled
and twisted, and vary so greatly in breadth, that, in some, there is only
a single line of granules, in others as many as twelve. Fach granule is
of a darker green than the rest of the frond, and of a square form,
which, under a good glass, is perceptibly divided into four parts by pellucid
lines ; or, perhaps, it might be more correct to say, th a t each gra-
nvile is composGd o f four smallGr ones.
Captain C a r m i c h a e l , the discoverer of the present highly
beautiful alga, correctly notices how nearly it is allied to Bangia
velutina, of A g a b d h ’s Systema Algarum (Scytosiphon ve-
lutinus, L y n g b . t. 16.) At the same time, I entirely agree
with him that they are specifically different. Bangia velutina
is an aquatic plant, an inch in length, and the fronds marked
hy a single or double series of quadripartite granules: B. calo-
phylla, on the other hand, is not aquatic, only 2-3 lines in
