POLYPORUS C a r m iCHAELiANüs.
Minute honey-combed Polyporus.
C l a s s a n d O h d ek , CRYPTOGAMIA FUNGI, £m m .— N a t . O r d . FUNGI, Link.
GEN ERIC CHARACTER.
Hymenium cum pilei substantia hmnogeneum et concretum, poris dissepimentis
tenuibus simplicibus instructum.— Pileus subcarnosus vel suberosus, plerumque
subsessilis, substantia fibrosa, sicca.
Hymenium of the same substance as the pileus, not separating from it, and
furnished with pores, connected by simple dissepiments.-—Pileus sub-
carnose or corky, mostly subsessile ; substance fibrous and dry.
S P E C IF IC CHARACTER.
P o l y p o r u s Carmichaelianus ; effusus, omnino resupinatus, tenuissimus, albus,
margine membranáceo laciniato, poris minutis, subhexagonis, hrevissimis.
P. effused, entirely resupinate, very thin, white, the margin membranaceous,
laciniated, the pores minute, subhexagonal, very short.
Hab. Decaying trunks and branches of trees ; Appin, Captain C a r m i c h a e l .
Entire plant resupinate, smooth, so thin as to be almost like a membrane, of
no regular form, effused, of a pure white colour, changing when dry to a
pinkish-brown, the margin membranaceous, and between byssoid and
laciniate. My specimen is 2-3 inches in breadth. Pores occupying almost
the whole substance of the plant, very shallow, minute, more resembling
somewhat hexagonal little pits or cavities than real pores, the
dissepiments very thin. Sporidia very minute, globose.
I feel rather at a loss where to place this very pretty species,—
whether in the tribe Resupinatus, or the sub-genus
Polysticta of F r i e s ’s System. The pores are hy no means
distant, but, on the contrary, their dissepiments are remarkably
thin, and the whole hymenium partakes in miniature of the
character of the first sub-genus Favolus; all which seems to remove
the species from the sub-genus Polysticta. And the extreme
shallowness of the pores, which do not at all resemble
tubes, equally exclude it from the resupinate tribe. The pores
