Pileus stipitatus aut sessilis, plus minusve cupuUformis vel complanatus, tubulis
elongatis sporuliferis in pagina superiore.
Pileus stipitate or sessile, dilated upwards into a cup-shaped or flattish receptacle,
with tubular elongated sporuliferous cells in the upper surface
or disk.

margine glabris, subtus pilis subiculo lato tomentoso adjixis.
P. carnose, sessile, cupula concave, brown, at length plane, grey, the mar-
gin glabrous, attached by fibres underneath to a widely spreading tomentose
web.

On the branches of Alder Trees ( Alnus glutinosa) , near Lasswade.
April and May.
Subjacent meb of a dark brown colour, spreading in an orbicular manner,
and often two or three inches in breadth, presenting a surface between
tomentose and granulated. The cupulce (little cups) at their first appearance
are h alf immersed, globose, minute, of the same colour as the
web, their margin connivent and pale, by degrees they expand, become
concave and brown, at length quite flat, grey, somewhat undulate, and
o f a soft consistence. The margin is always paler than the external
surface of the cupule, and glabrous. Beneath, the cupulæ are fixed by
numerous tliickish, short filaments to the subjacent web or stratum.
Thecoe slender. Sporidia minute, oval, few.
