H ab. On the ground, rotten wood, &c. Autumn and winter. Appin,
Captain Ca rm ic h a e l .
Web-like stratum 2-5 inches broad, byssoid at the margin, especially in
young plants, attaching itself to every thing in its way, plane, b u t undulated
by the subjacent substances, of a yellow or tawny yellow colour.
Captain Ca rm ic h a e l ’s specimens were tawny above, and very bright
yellow beneath. Perithecia globose, pale yellow, with their upper portion,
and slightly prominent convex fuscous orifices, exserted. In age
the perithecia seem to fall out, and leave notliing but their cavities.
Thecæ clavate, slender. Sporidia I have not seen.
Sphæria ochracea of P e r s o o n is of an ochraceous colour, and somewhat tuberculated
surface. When growing on the ground, both varieties are
thicker, and more carnose, than when they occur on wood.
