GENERIC CHARACTER.
Pileus stipitatus aut latere affixus, subtus lamellis sporuliferis, rectis, simplicibus.
Volva nulla.
Pileus furnished with a stipes, or fixed by its side, having on the under
surface straight, simple, sporuliferous lamellae. Volva none.
SPECIFIC c h a r a c t e r .
A garicüs radicatus; pileo rugoso, glutinoso, lamellis adfxis albidis; stipite
procero, rígido, basi dilatato, radice longa fusiformi.

thickened towards the base, root long and fusiform.

H ab. Woods, borders of fields, road-sides, &c. generally near the rotting
stumps of tre e s; not unfrequent. Summer and autumn. Foxhall,
near Fdinburgh. Woods at Balmuto, abundant.
Pileus convex-conical while young, at length nearly quite plane, obtusely
umbonate, more or less rugose and somewhat glutinous, smooth, generally
possessing considerable toughness and elasticity : in regard to colour,
it is very irregular, being whitish, ash-colour, brown, smoke-grey,
reddish, olivaceous, greenish, or even, according to S ch um a ch er , sometimes
yeUow ! the most frequent is an olivaceous and greenish hue.
Flesh very thin, white. Lamellae rather distant, white, fixed, rather
broad, entire, mostly 4 in a set. Stipes generally solid, rarely with a
small spongy cayity, 4-8 inches high, firm, smooth, slightly twisted,
pale fawn colour, pr tinged with green, gradually tapering upwards.
