G r im m ia torquata; caulibus elongatis, pulvinatis, foliis lanceolatis acuminatis,
superioribus piliferis, carinatis, siccitate insigniter spiraliter tortis.
G. stems elongated, pulvinate, leaves lanceolate, acuminate, carinate, the
uppermost ones piliferous, when dry remarkably twisted in a spiral
manner.

Hab. On rocks among the mountains, at a considerable elevation. Very
abundant in Breadalbane, on Ben Lawers, Craig Chailleoch, Meal-
greadlia, &c. Dr H o o k e r , Mr A r n o t t , Dr G r e v i l l e . Clova Moun-
tains, Mr D r u m m o n d .
Plant forming large rounded masses, S-12 inches broad. Stems equal, 1-3
inches long, bearing a few long erect branches in a fasciculated manner,
the summits of which are mostly on the same level. Leaves numerous,
suberect, lanceolate, acuminate, carinate, the margins somewhat reflexed,
the nerve running to the point or beyond it, in the uppermost
ones piliferous, and pellucid at the point. When moist, the leaves are
twisted closely round the stems in a conspicuously spiral manner. Co-
Imr greenish at the summit, b u t dark reddish or purplish-brown below.
Reticulation small, but the cellules not very densely arranged. Fructification
unknown.
Among the recent acquisitions of new mosses to the flora
of Scotland, are two new species of Grimmia, both of which
have been published in D r u m m o n d ’s “ Musci Scotici,” on the
authority of the manuscript of the second edition of the “ Mus-
