alfo was a diftina brick building for debtors, fenced off from the
felon fid e (to ufe an Old Bailey diftinaion) by a.ftrong and high,
paling.
This, inclofing a fpot of ground which had been marked out on,
the weft fide of the Cove for a Ihip-yard, landing provifions from
the tranfports, and completing the granary, formed the principal:
labour in which the public gangs were employed this month at.

I n tlie beginning o f July, the Francis returned from the wreck of
the Sydney-Cove, bringing the remainder o f her crew, except fix,
whom Captain Hamilton, her commander (and the only European
belonging to her, then alive,) had left in charge o f the part o f her
cargo which had been faved. The Eliza long-boat, which failed from
the ifland with them, had on board a few Lafcars and fome property ;
but having had to encounter a very heavy gale o f wind, and not
arriving with the fchooner, many doubts were entertained o f her
fafety. She was under the diiydtion o f Mr. Armftrong, the mafter
o f the Supply.
On the 17th, twelve days after the return o f the Francis, it came
on to blow' exceedingly hard at S. E. and S. S. E. by which many
large trees and lèverai chimneys were blown down. The gale was
