The fpirit o f adventure, which ftill manifefted itfelf in the arrival
o f fliips upon fpeculation, received fome check in the governor s
fending back three veffels that had arrived from Bengal, on
board o f which were not lefs than fifty-four thoufand gallons o f
fpirits and wine.
A quantity o f copper coin having been received, the governor
publiffied a table o f all the fpecie legally in circulation
within the colony, affixing the following rates to each, at which
they fhould be confidered and be a legal tender in all payments or
tranfadtions within the territory, viz.

And as the fupply o f cbpper was fent to relieve the inconvenience
under which perfons who wanted to make fmall payments laboured,
no fum exceeding 5 1. was to'be deemed a legal tender in
this money. It was alfo declared, that the exporting or importing
(except from the treafury) o f any fum o f the copper coin exceeding
5 1. fhould be punilhed by a forfeiture and fine of treble the value o f
the fum fo exported or imported.
Several fhips had arrived from India, England, and America,
moft of which had brought, upon fpeculation, cargoes confiding of
wine, fpirits, tobacco, teas, fugar, hardware, wearing apparel, & e .
& c. the fale o f which was, with the governor’ s approbation, ad-
vertifed by the commiffar'y, and publicly fold to all defcriptions o f
people.

Three fhips had arrived with convias, viz.
The Royal Admiral, on the 22d of November 1800.
Luz. St. Anne, on the 2 1ft o f February 18 0 1 .
Earl Cornwallis, on the 12th of June following.
On the 30th o f June 18 0 1 , there were in the fettlement, five
thoufand five hundred and forty-feven perfons j o f all defcriptions,
o f whom feven hundred and feventy-fix were children. At Norfolk-
Ifland the whole number o f perfons was nine hundred and fixty-
one, making a total o f fix thoufand five hundred and eight perfons
under the authority o f the governor.

December 1800, that a plot had been formed by fome of the con-
v ia s to murder the officers, and, getting poffeffion o f the ifland, to

Maior Foveaux/the lieutenant-governor, had found, what had been
fo much wanted and hitherto unknown, a good landing-place for
boats and fmall craft, in Anfon’s Bay, where there were four and
five fathoms o f water within a few yards o f the ffiore, which was
a fine Tandy beach, and the paffage free from rocks or ffioals.
