the commander of the Supply, had, at a very great expence, built a
handfome, large, and commodious manfion-houfe, on a fpot o f ground
which he held on leafe in the front of the cove, forming a principal
and ftriking objeft from the water. This houfe, on that officer’s
departure for England in the Buffalo, was purchafed for an
orphan fchool. _
Nothing has been faid in this account o f the public labour, of
preparing the government ground annually for feed and cropping it,
or o f gathering the harveft when ripe. But thefe muff be taken
into the account, as well as threfhing the corn for delivery, and
unloading the ftore fhips on their arrival; which latter work muff always
be completed within a limited time, purfuant to their charters.
It has been faid before, that it was impoffible to obtain a fair day’s
work from the convifts when employed for the public : the weather
frequently interfered with out-door bufinefs, and occafioned
much to be done a fecond time. Under all thefe difadvantages, apd
with a turbulent, refraftory body o f prifoners, we are warranted in
faying, on thus fumming up the whole of the public labour during
the laft four years, that more could not have been performed;
and it is rather matter of Wonder that fo much had been obtained
with fuch means.
