NEW S E R IE S OF NATURAL HISTORY
FOR BEGINNERS.
*** A good introductory series of books on Natu ral History for
the use of students and amateurs is still a desideratum. Those a t
present in use have been too much compiled from antiquated sources;
whilst the figures, copied in many instances from sources equally an tiquated,
are far from accurate, th e colouring of them having become
degenerated through th e adoption, for th e sake of cheapness, of
mechanical processes.
The present series will be entirely the result o f original research
carried to its most advanced p o in t; and th e figures, which will be
chiefly engraved on steel, by the artist most highly renowned in each
department for his technical knowledge of th e subjects, will in all
cases be drawn from actual specimens, and coloured separately by
hand.
Each work will tre a t o f a department of Natu ral H isto ry sufficiently
limited in extent to admit of a satisfactory degree of
completeness.
The following are now ready:—
