eyebrow and region of the eye; the malar stripe is formed of black spots and is very well marked ;
fore-neck greyish, slightly tinged with rufous, with a few triangular black spots.
In the winter plumage the colours are all more obscured with light edgings to the feathers, those
of the red throat being edged with hoary-grey. Young males have white throats like the females,
and their first rufous throats are more of an orange-cinnamon, not nearly chestnut like the
adults.
The adult male described is from Irkutsk and is in the Seebohm Collection, and the female is
from Native Sikhim in the Hume Collection. The male figured in the Plate is a specimen (not very
old) from Lake Baikal, collected by Dybowski; and the female is a young bird in winter plumage
from Pekin, collected by the late Consul Swinhoe. Both are in the Seebohm Collection.
