of I ’oi't JiU'kson, yet ncA'cr found elsewhere, with the solitary
exceptlou of Maugatainoka, (N cav Zealand,) Avhcro it Avas
discovered by iMr. Colenso.
A common and easily cultivated species.
A . formosiun is an evergreen F e rn Avith b ranching fronds,
four times pinnate. The pinnules are small, membranous,
rhomboidal, b lu n t, inciso-lobate, ste rile, serrate. Rachis pubesc
ent; stipes long, scabrous, lateral, ebeneous, and glossy, as
Avell as the petioles; this contrasts greatly Avith the A'ivid green
'of the pinnules.
Sori small, Avith an oblong kidney-shaped indusium, usually
'about six on each pinnule.
T he h e ig h t of the frond varies from eighteen inches to three
feet; one h a lf of Avhich is naked. The colour pale green. The
rhizoma is slender and creeping.
I t is a species A'ery readily p ropagated by spores, and also
by divisions of the creeping rhizoma; in short no care is requisite
Avith its propagation, as it is almost c ertain for seedlings to
spring up amongst the different plants in the house in Avhich
it is cultivated.
I am indeb ted to Mr. L amb, g a rd en e r to F. AVright, F sq .,
o f Osmaston Manor, for plants of this species; and to Mr.
Hen d e rso n , of IVentAvorth; and to Mr. Norman, of H u ll, for
fructified fronds.
I t is in the Catalogues of Messrs. A. H en d e rso n , of Pine-apple
