A native of the East Ind ie s, Ja[)an, and China.
Fronds slender, glabrous, p in n a te ; the pinnæ being linear
ra th e r pendulous, and would be more so were it n o t th a t the
fronds hold up ono another. T h e lower pinnæ bip a rtite or
hipumatifid and potiolulate; th e up p e r ones adnate. D e cu rren t
at their inferior base. The margin of the sterile fronds serrate ;
the fertile fronds have narrowe r linear segments. F ro n d s lateral
or terminal, attached to a short creeping rhizoma. N e a rly all
the fronds fertile.
L en g th of frond I'rom tivclvc to eighteen inches; colour lig h t
green.

T h e re are several varieties of this species, two of which arc
here noticed.
A ar. A. is more pendulous in h ab it, taking a character midway
between P . serrulata and P . umhrosa.
A'ar. B. is much more dwarf, not so many-branched, only
the two lowest pinnæ being branched. The p lan t Yvas received
from Air. James, of V an v e rt, in Guernsey, un d e r th e name of
P . falcata.
T’here is a varieW of this species which oiilv grows three
inches high, and having a peculiar rugose h abit. I t was raised
(from spores b ro u g h t from the islands of the In d ian Sea,) at
AYentworth, by Air. J . Henderson. I t is known u n d e r the
name of P . serrulata, minor.
