B e e c h e y ’s s a l a m a n d e r . Salamandra Beecheyi. t. 31. / . 3. Gray in Griffith,
Trans. Anim. Kingd. App.
Above black, smooth, with scattered elevated roundish granular tubercles. The chin, throat, abdomen
and unde r side o f the hind legs and tail, yellow, mingled with very minute pale, immersed dots, which are
la rge r on the sides o f the body and throat, where they appe a r to be pierced with a pore. Vent with a black
cross band. The head is depressed, rounder in front, and very wide behind. The tail is rather longer than
the head and body, rounded a t the base, and compressed a t the end, with a yellow slightly elevated keel
along its u p p e r and lower edge. The limbs moderate. The toes, four before and five behind, depressed,
and s ep a ra te ; the inner ones o f all the feet are very short, and ru d im e n ta ry ; the outer ones rather longer,
b ut shorter than the central ones, which are nearly equal.
The skin ot th e u p p e r pa rt o f the body and head, when the epidermis, which appe a rs to be very
fugacious, is taken off, is whitish, with very minute black specks, and the round tubercles are more m in u te ;
perhaps the sunk dots and pores on the unde r pa rt o f the body are only visible when the epidermis has been
removed, in which state, alone, I have seen those parts.
Length of the head, 10 lin e s ; o f the body, 1 inch, 11 lin e s ; o f the tail, 3 | in ch e s; fore feet and toes,
8 lin e s ; thighs, 6 line s; hin d legs, 4^ lines ; hind feet 6 lin e s ; width of the head, 7 lines.
A second specimen, which was rather larger, had the ta il only one line longer than the body and head,
and varied in the throa t b eing slightly spotted with black.
Inhab. Monterey. Specimen in the Museum o f the College o f S urgeons.
Eschscholtz, in his Allas, has described four Californian species of this family :
1. Salamandra attenuata. Esch. A tla s, t. 21.
H e has published considerable anatomical details o f this species.
2. Triton ensatus. Esch. Atlas, t. 22.
3. Triton torosus.
4. Triton tereticauda.
